The Harry’s Game theme song, famously known as “Theme from Harry’s Game,” is a landmark piece of music that brought Irish Gaelic into the global mainstream. Artistically crafted by the Donegal band Clannad, the song was originally commissioned for the 1982 ITV miniseries Harry’s Game, based on Gerald Seymour’s novel. The track later appeared on their influential album, Magical Ring.
Unlike standard television themes of the era, the song is sung entirely in Irish (Gaeilge). The lyrics are adapted from an ancient proverb found in the book Nuadh-Fhilidheacht, carrying a somber and philosophical message: “Everything that ever came will pass, east and west; the moon and the sun will pass; the young person and their fame will pass.” This theme of inevitability and the fleeting nature of life served as a hauntingly beautiful contrast to the show’s gritty narrative about the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Musically, the song is a masterpiece of vocal layering and synthesizer textures, blending New Age, Folk, and Pop elements. It reached No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart, making it the first song in Irish to reach the top five.
