Casper’s Galactic Upgrade
The Casper and the Angels theme song perfectly encapsulates the disco-infused, space-obsessed pop culture of 1979. Following the success of Star Wars and Moonraker, Hanna-Barbera moved Casper the Friendly Ghost from his traditional haunted houses to the year 2179. In this version, Casper acts as a guardian for two space-patrolling “Angels,” Dee Dee and Bunny, along with a cowardly ghost companion named Hairy Scary.
The theme is high-energy and funky, departing from the whimsical orchestral sounds of the original Harvey Comics cartoons. While this iteration of Casper was short-lived, it remains a fascinating piece of late-70s animation history, blending the supernatural with the science-fiction craze of the era.
During the late 70s, many classic characters were given “space” spin-offs to capitalize on the sci-fi trend. Casper and the Angels reimagined him as a helper for the Space Patrol.
Who was Hairy Scary?
Hairy Scary was a new ghost character introduced as Casper’s companion. Unlike Casper, he actually enjoyed scaring people, though he was often more afraid of things than they were of him.
What happened to the Ghostly Trio?
In this particular spin-off, Casper’s famous uncles (Fatso, Stinkie, and Stretch) were absent, replaced by the futuristic Space Patrol setting and characters.
