Behind the Music: Simple Joys
The Trotro theme song accompanies a series based on the famous books by Bénédicte Guettier. Premiering on France 5 in 2004, the show’s music reflects Trotro’s “little donkey” personality—mischievous, enthusiastic, and full of imagination. Unlike the high-production pop themes of American cartoons, Trotro’s music feels like a nursery rhyme, using traditional instruments to foster a calm yet engaging learning environment.
Spanning 78 episodes, the melody has become a staple of preschool programming across Europe and the English-speaking world. Its charm lies in its lack of complexity, mirroring the show’s hand-drawn, vibrant 2D art style and the relatable, everyday adventures of its protagonist.
