Theme Song Lyrics
Behind the Tune: Meaning & Story
The Three’s Company theme song is one of the most cheerful and recognizable melodies in sitcom history. Composed by Joe Raposo (famed for his work on Sesame Street) with lyrics by Don Nicholl, the song perfectly sets the stage for the show’s “farce” format. The famous lyrics—”Where the kisses are hers and hers and his”—cheekily reference the living situation of Jack Tripper (John Ritter) sharing an apartment with Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt) and Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers).
Premiering on March 15, 1977, the show was based on the British hit Man About the House. The theme song underwent slight variations in its arrangement as the cast changed over eight seasons and 172 episodes, but the core vocal track remained a constant comfort for viewers. Interestingly, while lounge legend Richard Cheese released a popular “groovy” cover in 2007 on the album Dick at Nite, the original series vocals were performed by Ray Charles (not the soul singer, but the famed chorus master) and Julia Rinker.
The final episode aired on September 18, 1984, leading into the spin-off Three’s a Crowd. Despite the passage of time, those first few bouncy notes of the theme song instantly evoke the sunny, slapstick energy of 1970s Santa Monica and the enduring comedic legacy of the late John Ritter.
