Behind the Music: Meaning & Impact
While David E. Kelley created the series, the iconic electronic theme music for The Practice was actually co-composed by Jon Hassell and Pete Scaturro. Jon Hassell, a world-renowned trumpeter and pioneer of “Fourth World” music, brought a unique, avant-garde texture to the show that set it apart from typical orchestral legal dramas of the time.
The theme is widely recognized for its gritty, mechanical aesthetic, which mirrored the show’s focus on the often “dirty” and unglamorous side of criminal defense law. Unlike the triumphant brass of other procedurals, this score emphasized the tension, moral ambiguity, and relentless pace of Bobby Donnell’s firm. The music was so effective it earned an Emmy Award in 1999 for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music.
