The Oblongs is an adult animated sitcom that first appeared in 2001. It was based on a book by Angus Oblong called Creepy Susie and 13 Other Tragic Tales for Troubled Children. The show follows a family that lives in a valley polluted by toxic waste from the rich people living on the hill above them.
The theme song was written and performed by the famous alternative rock band They Might Be Giants. The lyrics are short but they tell you exactly what the show is about: a family living in a “happy glowing home” surrounded by “hazardous foam” because of a chemical spill. The upbeat music contrasts with the dark, offbeat humor of the series.
Even though the show only had 13 episodes, it became a cult classic. After airing on The WB, it found a second life on Adult Swim, where many fans discovered its unique characters like Bob, Pickles, and their eccentric children.
