Behind the Superbook: Series Context
The Superbook theme song introduced millions of viewers to a unique collaboration between the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) and the Japanese animation studio Tatsunoko Production. Premiering in 1981, the series follows the adventures of a young boy named Chris Peeper, his friend Joy, and a toy robot named Gizmo who comes to life when the “Superbook” opens.
The show was part of a major effort to provide educational and spiritual content through the burgeoning medium of anime. With 52 episodes in its original run, the series became a global phenomenon, translated into numerous languages. The music’s sense of wonder and urgency perfectly matched the show’s premise: that history is an adventure waiting to be discovered. Its legacy continued with a high-definition 3D reboot in the 2010s, but the original electronic theme remains a nostalgic touchstone for 80s kids.
