Pretty Little Liars Theme Song Lyrics
Behind the Tune: Meaning & Story
The Pretty Little Liars theme song, titled “Secret,” is performed by the sister duo The Pierces. Interestingly, the song wasn’t written for the show; it was originally released on their 2007 album Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge. It was series star Ashley Benson (who played Hanna Marin) who reportedly suggested the song to the producers, as its haunting lyrics and dark, cabaret-pop style perfectly matched the show’s mystery.
Premiering on June 8, 2010, Pretty Little Liars follows four high school girls whose lives unravel after the disappearance of their queen bee leader, Alison DiLaurentis. The song’s central hook—”two can keep a secret if one of them is dead”—became the ultimate mantra for the series, foreshadowing the lies, betrayals, and the anonymous threats from “A” that would haunt the girls for seven seasons and 160 episodes.
The theme song became so iconic that it was reimagined several times. For the final season, the opening visuals were updated to show each of the four leads performing the famous “shhh” gesture. Even with the conclusion of the series on June 27, 2017, “Secret” remains one of the most recognizable theme songs of the 2010s, capturing the “living hell” of keeping secrets in Rosewood.
