The China Beach theme song, titled “Reflections,” is a soulful track that defines the emotional weight of this award-winning drama. Originally a 1967 hit by Diana Ross & the Supremes, the version used for the series became a sonic shorthand for the show’s exploration of the Vietnam War. Composed by the Motown team of Holland–Dozier–Holland, the lyrics—which touch on distorted reality and lost time—parallel the psychological toll on the medical personnel at the “Five-and-Dime” evacuation hospital.
Inspired by Lynda Van Devanter’s book Home Before Morning, China Beach aired on ABC from 1988 to 1991. The narrative offered a rare focus on the female perspective of the war, centered on Nurse Colleen McMurphy (Dana Delany). The melody serves as a bridge between the 1960s setting and the modern-day reflections of the characters looking back on their service.
While the original Supremes track remains the primary theme, the series’ score and musical arrangements were managed by John Sacca. Many of these tracks were later collected on the 1990 soundtrack album, China Beach: Music and Memories.
