The Adventures of Rupert Bear is a cornerstone of British children’s literature and television. Originally created as a comic strip by Mary Tourtel for the Daily Express in 1920, Rupert’s world of Nutwood is a blend of pastoral tranquility and surreal fantasy. Whether he is dealing with the eccentric inventions of The Professor or the magic of the Sage of Um, Rupert always returns home in time for tea.
This particular series, produced by ATV in the 1970s, used charming stop-motion puppetry to bring the world of the “Daily Express” annuals to life. The theme song, written by Len Beadle and Ron Roker, became a major hit, reaching the UK charts and cementing Rupert’s status as a cross-generational icon. With 156 episodes, it remains the definitive screen adaptation for many who grew up in the 70s.
